Seachem Alkaline Buffer is a non-phosphate buffer designed to raise pH and alkalinity (KH) in freshwater aquariums. Unlike competing buffers that rely on phosphates, Alkaline Buffer is ideal for the planted aquarium, where excess phosphates can lead to nuisance algae blooms. It is particularly effective when used in conjunction with Seachem Acid Buffer to target a specific pH level when using RO (Reverse Osmosis) or DI (Deionized) water.
Alkaline Buffer provides a safe and effective way to manage water chemistry without the side effects of traditional phosphate-based buffers.
Phosphate-Free Formula: Eliminates the risk of fueling hair algae or cyanobacteria, making it the superior choice for high-tech planted tanks.
Raises pH & Alkalinity: Effectively increases Carbonate Hardness (KH) to provide a stable buffer against pH crashes and acidic shifts.
Designed for RO/DI Water: The perfect tool for "reconstructing" water, allowing hobbyists to set their exact mineral profile from a blank slate.
Synergistic $pH$ Targeting: When used with Acid Buffer, you can "lock in" any pH between 6.0 and 8.0, providing a customized environment for specific fish species.
Highly Soluble Powder: Dissolves quickly and clearly, ensuring immediate bioavailability and minimal impact on water clarity.
How much Seachem Alkaline Buffer should I use?
To raise alkalinity, use 6 g (1 level teaspoon) for every 80 L (20 US gallons) daily until your target pH is reached.
Can I use this in a saltwater reef tank?
No. While it is an excellent buffer, it is formulated for freshwater chemistry. For marine systems, we recommend using Seachem Reef Carbonate or Marine Buffer.
Will this affect my General Hardness (GH)?
No. Alkaline Buffer specifically targets Carbonate Hardness (KH). To raise your General Hardness, you should use Seachem Equilibrium.
Seachem Equilibrium: Use alongside Alkaline Buffer to establish the ideal General Hardness (GH) for a planted aquarium.

Seachem Prime: Always treat your tap water with Prime before buffering to ensure chlorine and chloramines are neutralized.
